What is COP?

COP stands for "Conference of the Parties", meaning the annual meeting of the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

COPs are the yearly meetings of the parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change, including member countries and international organizations. The main goal of COP is to monitor progress in implementing commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change.

Vietnam's Participation in COP28

Vietnam is one of the countries heavily affected by climate change. Every year, Vietnam faces numerous natural disasters, storms, and floods causing significant damage to people and property.

At COP28, Vietnam made strong commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, developing renewable energy, and addressing climate change.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and a high-level delegation attended COP28, demonstrating Vietnam's commitment and positive engagement in international dialogue and cooperation on climate change. At this event, Vietnam participated in important activities, including the G77 Summit on Climate Change, a Dialogue on "Accelerating Coal Transition," and the announcement of the Resource Mobilization Plan for the implementation of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP). Vietnam also launched a unique project to cultivate 1 million hectares of high-yield, low-emission rice.

In each forum, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh delivered significant speeches, conveying key messages to the international community. He proposed that developed countries enhance support for developing countries, especially in areas such as concessional finance, advanced technology transfer, high-quality human resource training, smart management, and modern, suitable, and efficient market mechanisms for each country.

Vietnam's Commitment at COP28

1/ Commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Vietnam committed to reducing 27% of greenhouse gas emissions compared to the projected emissions in 2030 under the normal development scenario. This target is calculated based on Vietnam's economic and social development scenario, prioritizing the development of green, environmentally friendly economic sectors.

2/ Commitment to develop renewable energy

Vietnam committed to achieving a 50% share of electricity from renewable energy in the total installed capacity by 2030. This is the highest target in the Southeast Asia region.

3/ Commitment to address climate change

Vietnam is one of the countries heavily affected by climate change. Every year, Vietnam faces numerous natural disasters, storms, and floods causing significant damage to people and property.

Vietnam's strong commitments at COP28 demonstrate the government's determination to address climate change. These commitments are also expected to contribute to achieving the world's overall goal of limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial period.

Vietnam's Role at COP28

Vietnam played an active role at COP28, actively participating in negotiations and discussions. Vietnam also organized various side events at COP28, including exhibitions, workshops, and awareness-raising activities on climate change.

More than 10 years ago, Ho Chi Minh City invested over 8,600 billion VND to renovate the Nhiêu Lộc - Thị Nghè Canal, promising a green and refreshing space in the heart of the urban area. However, the current reality presents a heartbreaking image as the canal bears the brunt of a massive amount of waste. Despite the transformation of the banks, household waste such as plastic bottles, nylon bags, and styrofoam increasingly diminish the beauty and significance of the project. Notably, the lack of awareness among some individuals who directly dispose of garbage into the canal has escalated pollution, affecting not only the urban landscape but also the water environment and the health of the surrounding community.
