The ambient air monitoring station is a system of machinery and equipment capable of measuring and analyzing the quality of the ambient air environment using automatic, continuous methods and directly transmitting data to the management center, serving the state's environmental protection management work. The installation of an automatic ambient air monitoring station at the Luong Hoa landfill area is necessary and appropriate to the actual needs in environmental management and monitoring in the area.
Luong Hoa Waste treatment area - Nha Trang
Many waste sites in Khanh Hoa are currently overloaded, causing environmental pollution, while the local authorities lack funding for upgrades, expansions, or relocation. Khanh Hoa province has been focusing on addressing environmental pollution issues from open dumpsites and sanitary landfills, as well as making efforts to put industrial waste treatment stations and hazardous waste treatment into operation to actively handle locally. Among them, Luong Hoa landfill is where waste is collected for the entire Nha Trang city, with a volume of 450 - 500 tons per day. Various waste processing stages commence from this point.
Implementation of instructions for installing an automatic air quality monitoring system at Luong Hoa landfill
The People's Committee of Nha Trang City approved the installation report of the air monitoring station at Luong Hoa landfill.
The project for an automatic air quality monitoring station at Luong Hoa landfill site was approved for investment by the People's Council of Nha Trang City in Resolution No. 177/NQ-HDND dated December 10, 2020. The People's Committee of Nha Trang City authorized the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to be the investor planning the economic and technical report, as stated in Decision No. 2053/QD-UBND dated December 25, 2020.
On June 22, 2021. The Chairman of the People's Committee of Nha Trang City issued Decision No. 9439/QD-CT-UBND approving the economic and technical investment report for the construction of the automatic air quality monitoring station at Luong Hoa landfill.
Waste collection at sea is more challenging than on land due to its dependence on the weather. During the stormy season, boats might not be able to reach the islands. The period after a storm is the most challenging time, as the islands and seas are flooded with waste, and workers sometimes have to clean continuously for a week. Currently, it is estimated that on average, the collection team gathers 3 - 4 tons of waste from the sea and islands in Nha Trang Bay each day.
Waste disposal process begins
Luong Hoa landfill is where waste is collected for the entire Nha Trang city, with a volume of 450 - 500 tons per day. From here, the waste processing stages commence.
The waste is taken to the landfill after undergoing biological odor treatment to aid in decomposition, then compacted and compressed to reduce its volume, forming layers. Afterward, the waste is covered with soil and sprinkled with lime for disinfection. "The leachate from the waste penetrates into the ground can cause pollution. Therefore, the station is responsible for collecting all of it, passing it through an HDPE synthetic membrane layer and a continuous stirring and filtering pipe system. The leachate is treated with chemicals before being sent to the wastewater treatment station of the project in the southern Nha Trang via a dedicated pipeline."

This ambient air monitoring station will measure all harmful indicators present in the air and promptly alert when these indicators exceed thresholds, aiding the investor in handling incidents in a timely manner. It contributes to improving the living environment for the people by ensuring air quality.
Benefits of implementing the air monitoring system
The installation of an automatic ambient air monitoring station at Luong Hoa landfill is necessary and appropriate to the actual needs of environmental management and monitoring in the area. The monitoring data accurately reflects the essence of the air quality at the landfill, enabling government authorities, the operational unit of the Luong Hoa landfill, and the local residents to track and supervise. Additionally, it contributes to enhancing the environmental monitoring system of Khanh Hoa province, aligning with the national environmental monitoring system as per the official letter No. 3754/UBND-KT dated April 23, 2019, from the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa province.
The automatic ambient air monitoring station at Luong Hoa landfill is constructed in an empty land area at the end of Luong Hoa landfill, opposite the landfill processing station, in accordance with Decision No. 3227/QD-UBND dated December 1, 2020, of the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa province on the adjustment and supplementation of the Khanh Hoa province Environmental Monitoring Program for the period 2021–2025. The location of monitoring station is situated between Luong Hoa landfill and the existing residential area (according to the wind direction). Therefore, the monitoring station of the project ensures the goal of timely detection and alerting of any air pollution-related incidents.
Monitoring parameters transmit fast and accurate data
The monitoring parameters are displayed on the LED screen installed at the headquarters of Vinh Luong commune's People's Committee for the public to monitor the environmental parameters at Luong Hoa landfill, including SO2, CO, NOx, NO, NO2, O3, PM10, PM2.5, NH3, H2S, methyl mercaptan, Humidity, Pressure, Wind direction, Radiation, Wind speed, Rainfall intensity, and Temperature. The display color of the parameters will turn red if the values exceed the National Technical Standards for air quality.
